Popular etymology argues that the naming of the artsakh region is taken from the word "ar" which means aran and the word "tsakh" which means park or forest. Based on the meaning of the 2 words, the name republik artsakh has the meaning of taman aran or aran forest, it refers to the territory of this country which is in the mountains.
Artsakh is a de facto but not internationally recognized independent state founded on the basis of the nagorno-karabakh oblast autonomy of the azerbaijani SSR, technically this country we cannot find on the world map.
Because the international world has not recognized the sovereignty of the country and considers its territory to be part of azerbaijan. The design of the flag of this country adopts the design of the armenian flag, considering the fact that the majority of the people living here are armenians. The artsakh flag consists of 4 colors namely red, blue, orange and white.
The colors of the flag have their own meaning for the republic, such as red which symbolizes blood, blue represents the sky, orange symbolizes courage, and white symbolizes the separation of the current artsakh from armenia, the pattern shown in white symbolizes his aspiration to finally unite with the homeland of Armenia.
The conflicts that occurred in this region have been going on since the beginning of the 20th century, when the USSR came to power, despite knowing the local conflicts that occurred in the region, stalin later made the karabakh region an independent territory under the rule of Moscow.
Under soviet rule the conflicts that occurred could still be suppressed, since they were under one flag.
After the dissolution of the soviet union, the conflict over this territory again occurred, between armenians who had historical ties with the peoples of the nagorno karabakh region, and azerbaijan which de jurely had rights to the territory.
The conflict between the three had stopped after the armistice agreement in 1994.
But recently relations between the three, namely armenian, nagorno-karabakh and azebaijan, have heated up again. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict displaced 597,000 Azerbaijanis, including Artsakh residents, and 220,000 Azeri, 18,000 Kurdi citizens and 3,500 Russians fled Armenia to Azerbaijan from 1988 to 1989.
The Azerbaijani government estimates that 63 percent of refugees live below the poverty line.
The artsakh republic has eight administrative divisions. The artsakh region includes five districts of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast or NKAO, as well as the shaumian region in the azerbaijani SSR which is currently under azerbaijani control.
Following the declaration of independence of the artsakh republic, the azerbaijani government abolished the NKAO and formed an azerbaijani district instead. As a result, some artsakh divisions adapted to azerbaijani districts.
According to Human Rights Watch, an international organization that conducts research and advocacy on human rights, since the beginning of the karabakh conflict, armenians have provided assistance, weapons, and volunteers.
Armenian involvement in artsakh increased after the azerbaijani attacks in December 1993. The republic of armenia began sending conscripts and regular troops of the interior ministry and the army to fight in the artsakh.
Since proclaiming independence in 1991, nagorno karabakh has successfully held more than ten parliamentary and presidential elections, and has earned praise from international observers for taking place freely, fairly and transparently.
The presidential election in July 2012 was well received by more than 80 international observers, including the United States.

The term tatik-papik in armenian can be translated as grandparents. The monument is considered a symbol of armenian heritage in artsakh.
